It seems that every morning on my way to work I will hear a commerical on the radio for an IT certification course that will guarentee you job security. They use the downturn in the economy as a reason to tell people that if they have basic knowledge in Microsoft Word they should take these online courses to get into a field that has job security.
So many things wrong with this, to start IT jobs are affected by the economy just like any other industry. It may not be as bad but there are still plently of people in the IT world who are loosing their jobs and others who can’t find jobs. One simple 6 month certification course is not going to be the end all be all to get you into this new field.
Most companies I know of that are currently hiring are looking for one of two things. Either a degree or relative industry level experience. A certification gets you neither of those. Some programs promise to get you a certain number of interviews after completion but that still means that you have to impress the employer enough in that interview to actually get the job.
My biggest complain about these commercials is they are trying to pick people out of other industries and plop them into IT. I’ve heard one company offer money to live on while taking these courses. That to me is rediculas because it’s going to come back to haunt you when they are expecting payment and you haven’t found a job yet. It is difficult to get into the IT Industry to start with and you need to have a passion for what you are doing. If you’ve had the desire to get into IT for awhile now then more power to you just be aware it’s going to be a tough journey.
